Max Herbert Ludwig

Max Herbert Ludwig passed away at home September 11, 2012, after a brief illness. “Herbert” was born January 28th, 1921, in Perry, Texas, to Max and Essie Briggs Ludwig. He moved to Ennis, Texas, during his Freshman year in high school. He graduated from Ennis High School in 1939.

Herbert began his career with the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1940 and in 1942 he left to serve in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Herbert was a signalman on the destroyer, Kennison. In 1946, when the war was over he returned to Ennis and on February 16th, 1947, he married the love of his life, Mary Eleanor Comiskey.

Mary and Herbert were blessed with five children: Michael, Patricia, Rosemary, Joellen and Sylvia. Herbert retired from the railroad in 1986 after serving for 46 years.

Herbert is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary, and his children: Patricia and Joe Webster of Ennis, Texas; Rosemary and Miles Chesley of Cartersville, Georgia; Joellen and Mike Lennon of Italy, Texas; and Sylvia and Brian Fry of Ennis, Texas. Also surviving Herbert are his grandsons: Jason Webster, Adam Lennon, Russell Lennon, Dr. Patrick Chesley, Austin Fry, Alex Fry, Evan Fry and Christopher Callaway and his granddaughters: Erin Pierce, Jennifer Railsback, Melissa Ludwig, Sara Tornincasa, Joanna Cunningham, Dr. Rachel Thienprayoon, and Robin Lennon. He is also survived by six great grandsons and six great granddaughters as well as one brother, Freddie Ludwig of Ennis, Texas and one sister, Dorothy Nell Brown of Garland, Texas. Preceded in death by his son Michael Herbert Ludwig and his brother Buford Ludwig.

Herbert was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion as well as the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks. He was an avid bass fisherman and passed this hobby along to his children and grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons: Jason Webster, Adam Lennon, Russell Lennon, Patrick Chesley, Austin Fry, Alex Fry, Evan Fry and Christopher Callaway.

The family requests donations be made to St. Joseph’s Cemetery in his memory. We wish to thank everyone at Family First Hospice for the loving care they provided during his last days.
