David J. Schumacher, 78, left this earth early Sunday morning, March 12, 2023.  After a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia, he passed peacefully in his home under the care of his wife, Home Helpers, and Traditions Hospice.

David John was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on July 14, 1944 to Gwendolyn and Elgen Henquinette.  After losing his dad in World War II, David, at almost 5 years old, was then adopted by Viol J. Schumacher when Gwendolyn married again.  Taking a new last name, David grew up in various parts of the United States until graduating high school in Wichita Falls, TX during the summer of 1962.

Pursuing a life on his own, and the opportunity to serve his country, David enlisted in the United States Navy immediately after high school in August of 1962. Stationed in Alameda, California, David served on the supply ship, U.S.S. Bellatrix and later, the ammunition ship, U.S.S. Mauna Kea.  While on active duty, David was pursuing the love of his life, Mary Della Harber from Wichita Falls, Tx.

David and Mary were married on August 21, 1965 in Oakland California. He was soon deployed and performed his duties in the Vietnam War. David transferred to the Naval Reserves in 1966 and was discharged from service in August of 1968.

The couple and their young son, John David, settled in Ennis in 1968. "Dave" started a career in Ennis with a mechanic shop and soon added their daughter, Shannon Janel in 1972. Employment with the Southern Pacific Railroad-now Union Pacific- began a long-time career for David as a traveling mechanic, and he was able to retire from the railroad.  The family became active members of Anthony Drive Baptist Church where David was an avid coffee drinker, deacon and served as co-director of children's church with his wife, Mary.

"Mr. Dave" is still known for being able to repair or fix almost anything-and usually with a cup of coffee in his hand.  Those that love him associate him with quiet wisdom, a strong wit and servant heart. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, planning trips, camping and hanging out with his family.

David's legacy continues on through his wife of 57 years, Mary Della Harber Schumacher of Ennis; his son, John Schumacher and his wife Dana; his daughter, Shannon Eddins and her husband, Alan; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; family friend, Kathleen Tarnowski; church family and railroad co-workers.

A memorial celebration will be held Friday, Mar. 17, 2023 at Keever's Mortuary in Ennis beginning at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors beginning 2 hours prior to the service. A private burial will commence the week following.
