Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) David Wayne Stalter , 81, of Ennis, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, surrounded by family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and decorated U.S. Army veteran, David leaves behind a legacy of service, sacrifice, and love.

Born in Ennis on August 1, 1944, David proudly served his country for 30 years in the United States Army, from 1963 until his retirement in 1993. His career spanned assignments across the globe, including tours in Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Panama, and Southwest Asia, as well as stateside postings from Fort Hood, Texas, to Fort McClellan, Alabama.

Rising through the ranks of the Military Police Corps, David held leadership roles from Drill Sergeant to First Sergeant before serving as the 4th Regimental Command Sergeant Major from 1991 to 1993 — one of only a handful to hold that prestigious position. He led troops during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and was inducted into the Military Police Regimental Hall of Fame in 1999. His service was defined by mentorship, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to those under his command.

Shortly before retirement, David became a bilateral amputee below the knee due to his service during the Gulf War. Yet he never let that slow him down. He dedicated his post-military life to uplifting others — volunteering at rehabilitation centers, inspiring wounded warriors, and serving as a guest speaker at countless Military Police events. He worked tirelessly with organizations that support veterans, soldiers, and their families, embodying resilience and determination.

Beyond his service, David was a deeply loved family man. His children and grandchildren knew him as strong, supportive, and caring — a man who could be tough as steel one moment and gentle the next. He was admired not only for his courage in uniform but also for his unwavering devotion to family.

David is survived by his son, David A. Stalter, and his daughter, K'lane Stalter Ford, as well as 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda, and his daughter, Kianne Romine.  His family takes comfort in knowing he is now reunited with them.
