J.E. Keever Mortuary has been serving families in Ennis and surrounding areas since 1918. James Edwin Keever, Sr. purchased J.W. Neal Undertakers and Embalmers, located at 215 N. Dallas St. in Ennis, in May 1918. He soon changed the name of the business to J.E. Keever Undertakers and Embalmers and began his newly acquired business with two other employees. In 1945, Sam A. Keever joined his father’s business, J.E. Keever Mortuary. Together they operated the business until Ed Keever’s death in 1960. In 1963, the funeral home moved to its present location at 408 N. Dallas Street. Sam's son, David E. Keever, joined the firm in January of 1973 as a Funeral Director and Embalmer. He became president of the family-owned company in 1983. In June of 2000, Matthew K. Keever, the fourth generation of the Keever family, joined J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. as a funeral director and embalmer. J.E. Keever Mortuary, Inc. serves families in Ennis and surrounding communities of Ellis County. In October 1999, the Keever family opened its second location, J.E. Keever Mortuary, Palmer Chapel, located at 200 W. Jefferson Street in Palmer. And, in response to the growing demand of families desiring a less expensive alternative to traditional burial, the Keevers opened Twin Oaks Crematory in 2004. The Keever family is very proud of its heritage in serving others for more than a century. In today’s funeral business, it is unique that a family has had the privilege to serve the community for four generations. Personal service and community commitment have been a Keever family tradition since 1918.
